Course Title : Plant Pathology

Course Description:An introductory course aiming to provide students with an understanding of the basic principles and scope of Plant Pathologyand a necessary foundation for all subsequent courses in Plant Protection and Pest Management. Topics to be covered include: Objectives,significance and history of plant pathology. Disease expression and symptomatology. Aetiology of plant disease and classification of diseasesaccording to the nature of their causal agent. Parasitic or infectious diseases. Major groups of plant genic prokaryotes (bacteria, phytoplasmas,spiroplasmas) plant viruses and viroids, parasitic higher plants. For each of the above group of pathogens the following topics will be covered:General characteristics and taxonomy, morphology, reproduction, bio- ecology and pathogenicity. Production, release and dispersal of inocula.Aetiology, epidemiology and management of representative diseases. Non-parasitic disorders. Non- infectious diseases or physiologicaldisorders caused by temperature and moisture, extremes, nutritional deficiencies or toxicities pollutants, environmental and other abiotic factors.Disease diagnosis and management. The course includes lectures, field trips and practical’s.
