KNOWLEDGE AND ITS APPLICATION:
- Knowledge and understanding about basic and applied science, research methods and legislation on which the activities of the veterinary surgeon are based. To understand the principles of effective interpersonal interaction based on humanism and respect to human freedom and animal welfare, veterinary legal standards and professional ethics.
- Understand the behaviour, structure, functions, biochemical and pathological processes of healthy common domestic animals, captive wildlife and laboratory-housed animals; their rearing, breeding and care, ensuring welfare.
- Know the aetiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the common diseases and disorders that occur in all common domestic animal species and other diseases of international importance that pose a risk to national and international biosecurity and trade, in order to prevent the spread of diseases and ensuring animal welfare
- Know the main medicines, their effect, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and farmacopathology, compatibility and interaction; legislation and guidelines on responsible use of medicines, including responsible use of antimicrobials and antiphrastic drugs.
- Know veterinary public health issues, including epidemiology, trans boundary epizootic diseases, zoonotic and food-borne diseases, emerging and re-emerging diseases. Know food hygiene and technology.
- Know legislation related to a state and private veterinary practice, structure and functions of state veterinary service; to organize, manage and carry out veterinary service effectively; to record, analyse, share and provide information in effective way.
- Understand and apply in practice principles of evidence-based veterinary medicine.
ABILITIES TO CARRY OUT RESEARCH
- Use professional skills for progress in the development of veterinary science and practice in order to improve the animal health and welfare and to ensure the public health, taking into account social and economic factors, veterinary practical competencies and skills logically based on the newest research achievements.
- Be able to apply clinical, laboratory, research methods, analyse and understand the research problem, collect data and apply proper statistical methods for processing the data, use information technologies.
SPECIAL SKILLS
- Analyse and apply legislation relating to animal health and welfare, monitoring and control of zoonotic and common diseases; apply knowledge of quality assurance systems and risk management principles, requirements for the safe use of veterinary medicines and biocides in veterinary practice.
- Collect, analyse and publish important information regarding animal diseases, carry out a complete clinical examination, use safely modern diagnostic equipment, advice and prescribe diagnosis based appropriate treatment, prepare accurate clinical and client records, and reports for colleagues and public admissible and understandable form.
- Handle and if necessary to restrain the animal patients properly, safely and with respect to the animals, and instruct others in helping the veterinarian perform these techniques.
- Perform a complete clinical examination, collect, preserve and transport samples, select appropriate diagnostic tests, perform X-ray, ultrasound and express tests, interpret and understand the limitations of the test results, develop appropriate treatment plan and administer treatment in the interests of the patients and with regard to the resources available
- Attend all animal species in an emergency cases and perform first aid; recognize when euthanasia is appropriate and perform it legal with respect of the animal, using an appropriate method, whilst showing sensitivity to the feelings of owners and others, with due regard to the safety of those present; advise on disposal of the carcase.
- Assess the health, welfare and nutritional status of an animal and advise to the client on principles of keeping, care, growing and feeding of an animal or group of animals; follow principles of veterinary certification.
- Recognise signs of zoonotic and possible notifiable, reportable diseases and take appropriate action, including notifying the relevant authorities; apply principles of biosecurity in order to minimize risk of contamination of equipment, clothing, premises and environment until the disease will be eliminated.
- Prescribe for animal treatment only registered veterinary medical products ensuring that waste of veterinary medical products are safety stored and disposed in accordance with Lithuanian and European Union legislation and guidelines; record and report suspected adverse reactions of the veterinary medical substances.
- Apply principles of sterilization of the surgical equipment and instruments; safely perform sedation, general and regional anaesthesia using appropriate drugs; perform aseptic surgery correctly; assess and manage pain
- Perform a systematic gross post-mortem and microscopic examination, record observations, collect, store and transport samples, and assess of the results.
- Perform ante-mortem inspection of animals destined for the food-chain, including welfare aspects; correctly identify conditions affecting the quality and safety of products of animal origin, paying attention to animal nutrition and medicinal products prescribed for the treatment, to exclude those animals whose condition means their products are unsuitable for the food-chain; forbid slaughtering of an animal under conditions which carcases can be unfit for human consumption; evaluate carcass quality and safety for consumption
- Advise on, and implement, preventative programmes appropriate to the animal species and in line with animal health, welfare, public health and environment protection legal acts

- Communicate effectively with professional colleagues, clients, the public and responsible authorities; understand the ethical and legal responsibilities of the veterinarian in relation to patients, clients, colleagues, society and the environment; disseminate the progress of veterinary scientific and practical knowledge.

- Communicate clearly and collaborate with referral and diagnostic services, including providing an appropriate history.
